You can’t take it with you.
Thinking about your mortality can be confronting – but for Dick Hubbard, a motorbike accident in the Himalayas was the moment that ensured the city he and his wife Diana cared about would continue to be supported beyond their lifetimes.
With Dick being a former mayor and the family company a major employer of the city’s residents, the Hubbards have plenty of knowledge of the issues Auckland faces. And so, following the accident, they decided to leave the residue of their estate to the Auckland Foundation.
Already known for being community-minded and generous, donating through the Auckland Foundation was perfectly suited to the Hubbards’ requirements for meaningful and responsible investment in the city.
“It’s important to encourage other people to sign up to that concept of a better Auckland”, says Dick.
“What do you want on your tombstone? Here lies a man who made X amount of dollars? Or here lies a person who made a difference to their community?”
Meanwhile, for Diana the feedback on their donations made through Auckland Foundation is invaluable: “You have to know that you’re making a difference. We actually like to get feedback because we want to be responsible about it, have good stewardship.”
